What Personal Details Should Be On Your CV

This section is straightforward, but it’s important to start with some don’ts before we get on to the dos. Where people often get this section wrong is to put too much detail in.

Sadly, in the ageist society we live in it is not advisable to put in your date of birth if you are over 40. If you want to add any more details about yourself, why not add them to the additional information section.

There are a few options in this section. If you think it would help you get the job, you could also mention whether you have a clean driving license, for instance. Remember though, you don’t want to take up too much space with this section, and you want to make a crisp start with your CV and get onto the stuff that will get you that all-important interview.


The debate is where to put your education. Maybe the simplest answer is to decide how important the person reading the CV will think it is. If you have been Managing Director of a multi-national company, maybe your seven GCE ‘O’ level passes aren’t that crucial? Traditional CV advisers have always stressed that education should come up front in a CV. However, the more experienced you are the more likely you are to relegate your education to almost the last item on your CV. Of course, if you are just leaving school or college then your education is very important and it should be at the beginning of your CV. The judgement on this is really yours. The main problems people have with putting together their education sections are: how much detail to put in about the education how to set this section out.

The detail

In this section don’t be shy to put all your qualifications at school. You don’t need to give the grades for GCSEs if you went on to do ‘A’ levels. Don’t give details of exams you failed. The key here is to put down all the qualifications you have, because it’s likely to impress. You may then want to add a separate section where you list your training. All too often people tend to downgrade the value of training, but to many employers the training you have received is every bit or even more important than your formal education. After all, the employers who trained you thought it was important enough to spend money on, so why shouldn’t other employers?

So put down here every training course you have attended and any certificates you have. Today’s modern organization values training, so use this opportunity to tell them about what courses you have done. Do try to leave out irrelevant certificates and awards like the fact you earned a fire-lighting badge in the scouts or passed your cycling proficiency test.

The layout

This section often looks messy because people are left with a large block of text with both their place of education and their qualifications. A way of counteracting this is to break the section up into easily definable chunks. So, you might have a section headed Places of education, which lists the schools or colleges you went to, and where they are. Don’t mention your primary school here. You can then have a separate section headed Qualifications. Again, contrary to normal advice, we think a good idea is to start with the most recent qualifications you have. So if you have a degree, start with it and then work backwards.

Use Of A Personal Diary In Secondary Teaching

Personally, I found that an A4 size diary is more useful than the commercial ‘Teachers Diary’. A week to a double page is sufficient for your needs. I have found the commercially produced teacher’s diary to be too bulky and ‘one size fits all’ does not suit my requirements.

A school student’s diary can serve in this role as well. It has the advantage of already having a school calendar included as well as school times and rules for easy perusal.

In my diary I had these items:

  • The roll of each class I taught.
  • The roll of sporting and other extra-curricular activities
  • The calendar of all school events pasted in. I also write the personal ones in the diary by date.
  • Assessment/formal examinations dates
  • Deadlines for reporting
  • My weekly timetable, period times, rooms
  • List of exams I need to set and my marking schedule.
  • Daily lesson topics only – no planning
  • Record of student problems, punishments, my action to improve their behaviour, its success or otherwise and any referrals to other professionals and the results of that referral. Use pages in the rear of your diary to make fuller records after your initial record is noted on the day of the incident.
  • Absenteeism and truancy issues
  • Assessment issues of students, e. g. lateness, cheating/collusion and so on
  • Often sick students, learning, assessment and reporting issues
  • Parent/teacher meetings with agenda plus decisions taken and follow up plans.
  • My absences – sickness, professional development, special meetings, school camps
  • Staff and department meeting’s agenda
  • Sporting fixtures with venues, times, results
  • A record of meetings with the Principal, especially when parents are complaining about your performance or treatment of their child. Record what transpires and what decisions are made.
  • Record any health, behavioural and learning data on classes here with any instructions especially regarding emergency health related treatment.

In these diaries, there are always plenty of spare pages to use for other things. Here are some examples:

  • A record of all assessment results including practice assessment. You would need to paste in a photocopy of the reporting page for each class.
  • Roll of sporting teams
  • Records of department meetings and what action is required.
  • My personal and professional goals for the term, semester and year and my action plan to go with these goals.
  • A summary of the work program for each class you teach.

This became my most important working document. It went with me every day and everywhere I went. I always made sure that it was easy to see so that I would not forget to take it with me. I used bright stickers from my favourite sporting team to make it always visible.

It is important to keep your diaries at home for future use. It is amazing how often the information in a past diary comes in handy to solve a future problem.

At the end of each year, I would peruse my diary to see what I had actually achieved. I often thought that my year had been uneventful. However, the diary showed me I had achieved much more than I realised.

Social Class in America

In general social class refers to the distinctions between groups and individuals which are different from one society to another society or even within a particular society.

Every group of people believes in particular ideas such as age, gender, education, religion, income, family origin that put an individual in a higher or a lower position in a society.

Social groups in higher classes always possess great deal of power that gives them opportunity to subordinate lower classes.

The concept of class in the United States:

Class in the United States refers more to personal income, educational attainment and occupational prestige for those of 25-year-old or older. although there are many people in the United States who believe that American society has been divided into three groups of poor, middle class and rich, this society is more diverse culturally and economically. While some theorists believe that because of such diversity it is impossible to draw a distinctive lines between social classes in the United States, but there are some who think it will be helpful if we consider major classes to discus about class matter and to understand it better.

The American society categorized into five major class systems:

The first one is upper class which defines as those with great deal of power who are prestigious and influential especially on the nation’s institutions.

The second class system is upper middle class that refers to those who enjoy high job with comfortable personal income. Most of them have received post-secondary degrees and they belong to the white collar professions.

Lower middle class is the third system that refers to those with college education who usually suffer from the lack of job security. They don’t receive proper income also.

The fourth system labeled as working class includes those individuals who belong to blue as well as white collar workers; most of them have not received collage degrees (even there are many who have never attended colleges) and suffer from low personal income.

Those who are in lower class are marginalized and poor although they work day and night.

Since the majority of people in the United States know themselves as middle class, it would be helpful if we concentrate more on this particular system to understand the United States’ social conditions.

Culture, educational attainment and income are three factors so influential on an individual to identify himself/herself as a member of middle class.

Different social groups in the United States’ society feature their own sub-cultures including common beliefs and manners accepted by all the members. Sub- cultures can influence the way members look at the world and even the way they raise their children.

If an individual ascends or descends from one social class to the other one class members will change their class culture. As class culture changes individuals’ attitude toward the world, it can be influential directly to the necessity of education in the eyes of the social classes’ members and indirectly to the members’ income.

In America to the extent people become more educated they can earn more money and they can be able to occupy more prestigious locations. Prestigious location is the other factor that besides higher education and comfortable income influences an individual to identify himself or herself as an upper middle class or upper class member.

A Personal Trainer’s Certification – Understanding the Alphabet Soup After the Trainer’s Name

Virtually every Personal Trainer will have a series of letters after their name indicating some, if not all, of the fitness certifications they hold. Often it will be CPT, meaning Certified Personal Trainer. The organization that bestows the title is more important than the letters CPT. This article will give you an idea what to look for AND what to look out for in a Personal Trainer’s certification. Armed with this information, you will have a much better opportunity to hire the right Personal Trainer for YOUR needs.

Currently there are currently only seven organizations in the exercise industry that meet the stringent requirements of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, The Cooper Institute, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the National Council on Strength and Exercise, the National Federation of Professional Trainers, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Holding a certification from one of these organizations does not mean you’ve found a Great Personal Trainer. It means that individual meets one of the criteria for being a Great Personal Trainer (see my article on The Five Traits of a Great Personal Trainer) and may possibly be the person to help you get in the best shape of your life. Getting in the best shape of your life does not include limitations for age or your current physical condition. Unless you are afflicted with an ailment that precludes exercise, a Great Personal Trainer can help you get in the best shape of your entire life, as safely, painlessly, and expediently as possible, regardless of age or current physical conditioning. That is the Personal Trainer we are seeking!

A certification from one of the above organizations means the Personal Trainer has met a strict and thorough process to become a Certified Personal Trainer. They have an understanding of anatomy and physiology, which exercises work various muscle groups, a basic understanding of designing an exercise program for a variety of clients with differing physical abilities, and the knowledge to implement those programs. Importantly, the organizations also require CPR certification and continuing education to maintain certification. CPR certification is important for obvious reasons…and not just in an exercise setting. If you are not CPR certified, consider doing it. You will learn how to potentially save a life with a few hours training.

The continuing education requirement for Personal Trainer certification is vital because exercise science is a dynamic discipline. Ongoing research studies by non-biased entities, such as universities and hospitals, provide constant information updates on our understanding of how exercise affects the human body. This promotes more effective program design and more efficient results for the client. In other words, by staying informed about updates in exercise science your Personal Trainer can continue to help you achieve peak performance, improving your fitness level as proficiently as possible!

There are too many “Certified Personal Trainer” programs to list that do not meet the standards of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. The reasons they don’t meet the standards are also too numerous to list but let me give you a few: For $99 you can take an online test for certification and become a CPT instantly. If you fail the first time you are allowed to continue re-taking the test until you pass. Multiple organizations design their own educational material, administer their own tests, and grade those test, with no outside oversight. Think about that for a minute.

Would you want your doctor to be educated, tested, and licensed without some type of objective outside oversight? I think not. Other programs are put together by bodybuilders or powerlifters and cater to that audience. The problem is that they are only “qualified” to work with that small segment of the population but their business card says “Certified Personal Trainer.” When their rent is due, they may decide you meet the requirements to become one of their clients. This is a short list of the potential problems encountered when dealing with a Personal Trainer certified by anyone other than the seven organizations certified by the NCCA. My advice is to avoid them.

Certification by one of those seven groups does not guarantee you will get a Great Personal Trainer from them but it does mean the person is at least qualified to hold the title Certified Personal Trainer. Use the list of organizations as a shopping guide when looking for a Personal Trainer.
